Our Sustainability Targets 2030

Greenhouse gas emissions

As a chemical industry we have a large footprint when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions. Our production processes are often energy intensive and our feedstocks are traditionally fossil based. Therefore reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of our top priorities.

Perstorp has approved science based targets for Scope 1&2 aligning with Paris agreement 1,5 C target and for Scope 3 involving indirect emission connected for example to the raw materials used and the end of life of our products.

To reach our science based targets in 2030 we have to look at every aspect of the company and prioritize the areas where we have the largest impact. Until 2030 our focus is on reducing our energy consumption and shifting to renewable or recovered energy sources but also shifting significant parts of our raw materials from virgin fossil to renewable or recycled and help increasing recyclability of end products in society.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION TARGETS 2030

• Scope 1 & 2 emissions – absolute CO2 reduction of 46.2 percent until 2030 from a 2019 base year.
• Scope 3 emissions – CO2 reduction of 27.8 percent per ton product sold until 2030 from a 2019 base year.
  
  

WHAT ARE PERSTORP’S SCOPE 1, 2 AND 3 EMISSIONS?

• Scope 1 emissions – Direct emissions from production sites.
• Scope 2 emissions – Indirect emissions from purchased energy.
• Scope 3 emissions – Indirect emissions mainly related to raw materials, transport, waste and end of life treatment of products.

Water

Perstorp’s production sites all use water to some extent – for cooling, as a solvent for chemical reactions, a carrier for products and a heat-transfer medium. Freshwater is part of our overall Finite Material Neutral ambition and we work to reduce our water footprint through efficiency and reuse technologies. One way to reduce the use of freshwater is to purify and recycle wastewater, a thechnology that we are planning to introduce at several of our sites.

• 30% absolute reduction of freshwater consumption, from a 2019 base year.

Waste

Minimizing waste in all phases of production remains a priority at Perstorp and waste is one of the focus areas of our Finite Material Neutral Ambition. We strive to avoid the generation of waste by focusing on quality management at all our production sites and finding new, circular ways of using our residues. When waste cannot be avoided, we strive to divert it from disposal in landfill and incineration by recycling it or preparing it for reuse.

• 30% absolute reduction of hazardous waste directed to disposal, from a 2019 base year.
• 30% absolute reduction of non-hazardous waste directed to disposal, from a 2019 base year.
  
  

(eco) toxic impact targets 2030

The (eco) toxic impact is the impact that chemicals produced by Perstorp have on human health and the environment. (eco) toxic is derived from both eco-toxicology and toxicology. Eco-toxicology refers to the impact chemicals have on the environment, and toxicology to the impact on humans.

• No chemicals of concern should reach the consumer or professional market.
• Newly developed products should be safe and sustainable by design.
