Project Air: transforming the chemical industry

Perstorp is proud to be driving the sustainable agenda towards a climate neutral chemical industry. Project Air will significantly reduce our carbon emission and also enable the supply of sustainable raw material for a large variety of end products.

Reducing carbon emissions

Planned to be finalized in 2025 Project Air will reduce Perstorp´s carbon emission by approximately 500 000 tons annually using a flexible mix of CCU and circular/renewable feedstock to produce sustainable methanol.

Traditionally, the chemical industry has been heavily based on feedstock such as oil and coal. In Perstorp’s case methanol has been and still is a key raw material. For 100 some years, the chemical industry has therefore depended on fossil based raw materials, to produce different chemical products. That is, until now!

Circular chemistry calls for circular processes

Perstorp has developed a process to use carbon emissions as a raw material for chemical products. With this process, fossil methanol can be replaced with sustainable methanol produced from carbon dioxide, captured from Perstorp’s production, and used as building blocks for chemical production – making the shift from fossil to circular possible for the chemical industry.

Project Air will substitute all the fossil methanol used by Perstorp in Europe as raw material for chemical products with sustainable methanol. It will do so by using CO2 as raw material in a first-of-a-kind Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU) process combined with gasification of biomethane and residue streams, integrated with a world scale electrolysis unit using purified wastewater and renewable electricity.

Enabling sustainable transition across industries

With Project Air, we are able to supply sustainable chemical products to a large variety of sectors and end products such as paint, furniture, electronics and wind power. In the end, enabling the sustainable transition across industries!
