In both breeders and layers egg quality is an important performance indicator. Egg weight, egg shell strength, hatchability and laying percentage can all be affected by animal health and microbial infections. Especially in older animals these issues can influence performance. Among others, butyric acid can have a positive effect on these parameters.

The effect of butyric acid in breeder birds and their day-old chicks is linked to a lot of factors, bacterial contamination being one of them. Egg shell quality is one of the factors that affects the amount of bacterial infections. This research investigates the effect of adding butyric acid on the egg shell quality.

A trial was conducted at the University of Nebraska beginning of 2017 to measure the effect of tributyrins on laying hens. The hens were 86 weeks of age at the start of the trial and parameters such as egg shell quality, laying percentage and Ca/P-digestibility were measured versus a control group that did not receive any treatment.
