Perstorp municipality best in Sweden for emission reduction

On the 25th of July, Sveriges Television (SVT), the Swedish public service television company showed a local news report from our site in Perstorp, highlighting the fact that in one year, carbon dioxide emissions in Perstorp were reduced by 26%.

From the year 2020, site Perstorp started working actively to reduce the proportion of peat in the fuel mixture. In 2023, the heating oil, which was fossil, was also replaced with the new renewable alternative bio-oil. This led to a 75% reduction in our direct carbon dioxide emissions. Today, the emission is 8,000 tons of direct carbon dioxide emissions from the steam plant, compared to the 35,000 tons from the year 2019.

When Klimatkollen, a media platform, compiled the changes in emissions across Swedish municipalities for 2021 and 2022, the municipality of Perstorp gained national attention for its remarkable progress. Leading the statistics, Perstorp achieved a 25.6% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, placing it in the top spot. According to data from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, while industry remains the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Perstorp, it also saw the most significant decrease in emissions during this period.

“I’m proud of the emission reduction. The chips that will replace the peat are a residual product and are therefore cheap. Since about 2 years ago, the price of wood chips has increased by 400 percent. At the same time, the original price is still so low that it is still economically advantageous compared to fossil fuels”, says Michael Cronqvist.

These significant reductions in carbon emissions are a great demonstration of Perstorp’s commitment to sustainability and the effectiveness of our proactive environmental strategies. This achievement not only benefits our local community but also sets a strong example for the industry.
