Upgrade recycled PET with heat resistance

The thin wall packaging industry faces the multi-faceted challenge of ensuring product safety, performance, and environmental responsibility. Akestra™ solutions stand at the forefront of enhancing the functionality and circularity of recycled PET (rPET) for the food packaging industry. This innovation elevates the aesthetic and performance qualities of rPET to match those of virgin plastics and contributes to environmental sustainability by promoting circularity in packaging solutions.

The challenge

Each year, Europe sees around 24 million tons of plastics incinerated, releasing nearly 70 million tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere. Regulatory measures, including the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste regulation and the Single-use Plastic Directive, underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions. The market demands packaging that not only meets stringent safety standards but also aligns with circular economy principles.

The Akestra™ solution

Akestra™ leads the way in this shift by enabling circular rPET hotfill food packaging solutions with efficient greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. As a state-of-the-art hotfill packaging solution, it offers:

  • Circularity by design: Hotfill food packaging solutions based on Akestra™ can incorporate up to 90% of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, or partly renewable content with Bio-PET, and offer up to 70% of GHG emission reduction from cradle to grave. As per TCEP endorsement, it is recyclable in the Tray-to-Tray PET transparent stream.

  • Hotfill capabilities for rPET: Akestra™ is engineered to withstand the demands of hotfill processes up to 95°C. This makes rPET a viable food packaging alternative to conventional plastics, such as polystyrene or polypropylene, which are much more difficult to recycle.

  • Exceptional clarity and rigidity: Its glass-like clarity and enhanced rigidity make Akestra™ the material of choice for visually appealing and structurally robust thin wall packaging.

Akestra™ applications

Akestra™ can be used in various industries, such as the food and beverage industry, where it can be utilized bottles, containers, and other packaging solutions that require strength, visual appeal, and the ability to withstand hotfill processes.
